Discussion & Business:

1)  The next VE test session is at the Thomasville library on Saturday May 19, 2018 @ 0:930h.    Tony KG4TAH has asked KK4RR to take over his position as team leader for the administration of exams in Thomasville.

2)        Summer Field Day.  June 23-24.  This annual event has been held since 1933 and remains the most popular event in ham radio. More than 35,000 hams will gather with their clubs, group, or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Last year we set up 2 stations at Arrowhead Campground in the Uwharrie National Forrest.

Denny Smith, KG4RBS, and Anthony Laskis, N4AGL, have served as a scouting party to seek desirable locations for this coming Field Day. After review of all locations available, and in consultation with the board, we have selected the site to be at the North Overlook of Oak Hollow Park in High Point. The site has a large shelter with tall oak trees at either end. There is good parking, and access to bathroom facilities. There is also a playground for young children less than 20 yards from the shelter. We will have access from about 8am to 7pm at a cost to the club of $80. We can setup in the morning and operate all day. The mayhem will start at 2. We can take turns operating SSB, CW and FT8 on 40 and 80 meters. Field Day is an opportunity to play.  The site offers AC hookups, but we could bring generators or batteries.
I propose that we serve sandwiches at about noon, and Hamburgers and hotdogs later in the day. We have to be packed up and out the door at 7p.
Motion to approve expenditure of site rental and purchase of food and supplies for club picnic was made by KK4ZIU and accepted by voice vote.

3)    Clubhouse Caboose(!)

We have been given the opportunity to resume a more active and regular operating presence in the Thomasville caboose in exchange for cleaning and some minor internal repairs/refurbishing to make the caboose more suitable for club activities and group operations.
John KD4LHP has been in consultation with city officials to provide supplies necessary to paint the caboose.

Benefits.  The caboose can function as an informal club house and can be opened regularly for operations, perhaps one day or night a month. We can keep a radio and antenna in locked closets for members use.

Costs.  The caboose needs the following maintenance and supplies: Thorough cleaning, painting of all internal surfaces, a sturdy table, folding chairs, a source of heating and cooling.
More information will follow concerning potential workdays.

4)      Proposed amendment to bylaws.

The proposal would make the following technical correction to Subsection 3.2(d) (with bold underlined text showing the proposed new language):

"d. New Member: A person who first becomes a new member during the first three quarters of any year shall owe no dues for that year. A person who first becomes a new member during the last quarter of any year shall owe dues for neither that year nor the following year. A "new member" is someone who has never previously been a member."
A motion to approve the change in bylaws as stated was made by W8LWX and approved by raised hands.

5)   John W8LWX serves the club in many roles, as informal legal counsel and web guru, among others. He has been webmaster for nearly 5 years and has recently advised the board, that he wishes to pass the baton of webmaster to another capable club member. Many thanks to John for his years of service.

Your board is researching its options. We expect to move the email server first, and the web page thereafter.

Ed, K4EBF, expressed the club's shared appreciation for the many years of good and helpful work John, W8LWX has offered to the Tri- County Amateur Radio Club.  The club responded in applause!

Harlan Cobert, Director of Forsyth County ARES, shared a presentation on the Amateur Radio Emergency Services organization through the lens of his work in and beyond the Forsyth County ARES unit.

Other Business and Announcements:

1)    John, KD4LHP, inquired about the status of the meeting location decision.  After a brief discussion the club decided to make a final decision on the matter before adjourning the meeting.

John, KD4LHP, moved that we choose as our permanent meeting time and location the 2nd Saturday of each month at Laughlin's in Thomasville.

NOTE: BOTH the TIME and the LOCATION have been permanently changed.  Notices to this effect will be posted to the website and the club will consider any helpful changes to bylaws to conform them to this decision.

2)    Richard, KK4RR, announced that the contest results for the NC QSO Party have been released and we have extended our winning streak by yet another year!

Motion to Adjourn made by:  W8LWX
Approved by movement toward the door.

Minutes compiled and submitted to the Board of Directors by Don Durham, W4DWD, Secretary.
