Tri-County Amateur Radio Club
Minutes of Meeting: 14 August 2021

A regular monthly meeting of the Tri-County Amateur Radio Club was held on Saturday, 14 August 2021 at 8:30 am EDT at Myers Park in Thomasville, with the president, W4DAE-David, being in the chair.  The meeting was called to order at 8:37 am.

Members Attending:  K8AOK, Donn; W4DAE, David; K4KKT, Joe; W8LWX, John; KJ4NUS, Steve; KJ4NUU, Vanda; KO4QOO, Keith; KK4RR, Richard; and KJ4UYR, Janice.

Guests: None.

Adoption of Agenda

A draft agenda, which had been distributed prior to commencement of the meeting, was adopted by unanimous consent.

Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting

By unanimous consent, reading of the minutes of the July 2021 meeting was waived and they were adopted.

Reports of Officers and Committees

Report of the Secretary. -- As of the day of the meeting, we had 45 members, all in good standing.  No new members have been added to the roster since the previous monthly meeting.

Report of the Treasurer. --  For the 2021 dues year, month ending July 31, 2021, we still had $213.44 set aside as operating funds, out of our initial budget of $390.  We had a total of $918.31 in "cash on hand," which includes the balances of our checking, savings, and PayPal accounts, plus any currency, coins, and checks awaiting deposit. By subtracting our operating fund reserves from cash on hand, we see that we had $704.87 in uncommitted resources as of 07/31/21. Through our seventh month of the 2021 dues year, we had received $907.10 in dues and donations and had spent $1,246.77, resulting in year-to-date net loss of $339.67.

Report of the President. --  W4DAE, David, reported the following:

The new 7/8" Heliax feedline for the club repeater has been installed.  Photos have been posted on NC4AR.org.  A connector on the antenna itself was then found by KF4OVA-Keith and KF4QDS-John to have a bad ground, so they pulled down the antenna, repaired it, and put it back up.  Now we're waiting for a new connector, which should arrive any day now.  KF4OVA will then check the SWR with the new connector in place.  Probably in the next week, he will swap the system over to the Sinclair duplexers, donated by AD4TZ last year, which have better separation of transmit/receive signals and will therefore better facilitate amplification of the weak output on transmit.  Many thanks to KF4OVA and KF4QDS for all their great work!

Open Motions from Previous Meeting

There were no open motions from the previous meeting.

New Business

KW4IL, Bart, resigned from his position as vice president shortly after the July 2021 monthly meeting.  Our bylaws required that the vacancy be filled by an election at the next regular monthly meeting.  K8AOK, Donn, was nominated to serve out the unexpired term and was elected by unanimous consent.

W4DAE led a discussion of the club's repeater site, especially the recent determination that the shack at the base of the tower needs a small "window unit" air conditioner because ambient temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit may pose a risk of damage to the finals in the Fusion repeater.  We are hoping there is a club member with a working window unit he or she can donate or, failing that, we would hope to collect cash donations for the purchase of a new one (they typically cost around $150).  Failing that, we could use club funds already on hand if membership approves.

As a result of the discussion, K8AOK moved to authorize the expenditure of up to $160, plus any applicable sales tax, to purchase a new air conditioner for the club repeater shack.  The motion passed by unanimous consent.

Program and Announcements

KK4RR, Richard, led a discussion on ways we might better integrate new license testing, club meetings, and assistance to new hams on such matters as programming HTs and setting up antennas.  He reported that the new regime of having test sessions on the third Saturday of every month, as opposed to the previous practice of every other month, has been working out great.  The reason for choosing the third Saturday is that other nearby clubs already offer testing on the first and second Saturdays of each month.  Richard stated that it would be helpful to schedule test sessions for the same days as, and immediately after, club meetings -- and since the test sessions need to be on the third Saturday, this would mean changing the club meetings to third Saturdays to match.  No motion was made on this proposal, in order to allow club members to think about it for a month or two before making a decision.

KJ4NUS, Steve, reported that the club's Field Day contacts had been successfully submitted to, and acknowledged by, ARRL.  Steve stated that, with 12 members participating, he regarded the event as a success and learned a great deal about Field Day.  The experience suggested that there are ways we may strengthen and improve our performance in the future.  Some of these ideas were discussed.

W4DAE announced that there will be a program next month, presented by himself and W4CHI, Ron, reviewing chest harnesses for holding HTs.  Since Myers Park turned out to be an excellent location for the August meeting and has restrooms available, an attempt will be made to secure it for the September meeting and possibly future meetings.  Meeting indoors at a restaurant is still not a viable option, due to the new surge in coronavirus infections and the difficulties restaurants were already having with keeping enough staff to serve customers.

There being no further business on the agreed agenda, the meeting was adjourned without objection at 09:33 am.

Respectfully submitted,
/s/ W8LWX-John
