Tri-County Amateur Radio Club
Minutes of Meeting: 11 Sep. 2021

A regular monthly meeting of the Tri-County Amateur Radio Club was held on Saturday, 11 September 2021 at 8:30 am EDT at the public park shelter across from 201 Stadium Drive in Thomasville, with the president, W4DAE-David, being in the chair.  The meeting was called to order at 8:34 am.

Members Attending:  W4CHI, Ron; W4DAE, David; K4KKT, Joe; W8LWX, John; and N3NCN, Mark.

Guests: None.

Adoption of Agenda

A draft agenda, which had been distributed prior to commencement of the meeting, was adopted by unanimous consent.

Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting

By unanimous consent, reading of the minutes of the August 2021 meeting was waived and they were adopted.

Reports of Officers and Committees

Report of the Secretary. -- As of the day of the meeting, we had 46 members, all in good standing.  The one member added to the roster since the previous monthly meeting was KM4UHU, Bobby Draughan of High Point, who has returned to the club after an absence of a few years.  Welcome back, Bobby!

Report of the Treasurer. --  For the 2021 dues year, month ending August 31, 2021, we still had $213.44 set aside as operating funds, out of our initial budget of $390.  We had a total of $958.31 in "cash on hand," which includes the balances of our checking, savings, and PayPal accounts, plus any currency, coins, and checks awaiting deposit. By subtracting our operating fund reserves from cash on hand, we see that we had $744.87 in uncommitted resources as of 08/31/21. Through our eighth month of the 2021 dues year, we had received $947.10 in dues and donations and had spent $1,246.77, resulting in year-to-date net loss of $299.67.

Report of the President. --  W4DAE, David, reported the following:

We're waiting to hear from KF4OVA whether the donated Sinclair duplexers are now being used on the club's 145.290 MHz repeater.  The repeater has been doing pretty well for the past few weeks even without the Sinclair duplexers or the additional amplifier.

Open Motions from Previous Meeting

There were no open motions from the previous meeting.

New Business

Last month, KK4RR initiated discussion of the desirability of switching the normal monthly meeting day from the second Saturday of each month to the third Saturday of each month.  Section 4.2 of the bylaws states that regular monthly meetings will be held on the second Saturday of each month "or at such other regular time as may be deemed convenient if adopted by the membership as a standing rule."  W8LWX moved that the normal date be set as the third Saturday by standing rule.  The motion was adopted by unanimous vote in a show of hands.

Also last month, KK4RR expressed a desire to have some kind of club flier that the exam testing team could give to new licensees to help promote the club and give licensees a place to turn for answers to their questions about ham radio.  W4DAE distributed some sample cards he had created for this purpose.

W4DAE reminded members that he must soon appoint a nominating committee to ensure that there is at least one nominee for each officer position prior to the November deadline for elections.  W4DAE is already in his second term as president and therefore cannot stand for re-election under the current bylaws, which impose a two-term limit on the president and vice president.  Volunteers are sought for the nominating committee.

Announcements

W8LWX made the following announcements:

Club Repeater. --  Now that the 145.290 MHz club repeater is hearing so much better and transmitting with less loss, all members are encouraged to give it a try!  On our Thursday nets, we've been hearing from some people on the 145.290 repeater that we haven't heard from in a long time.  This includes stations in Thomasville which previously had seemed to be in an RF "shadow."

Donations. --  The more resources we have, the more we can accomplish.  Cash donations can be made at any time via the PayPal button on the Home page of NC4AR.org.  A PayPal account is not required; any credit card can be used.  Donations can also be made by mail with a check (payable to Tri-County Amateur Radio Club) or by handing cash to the treasurer at a meeting (a receipt will be written on the spot).  Finally, special thanks go out this month to N3NCN (Mark) for his kind and generous donation last month of an air conditioner to keep the club repeater from burning itself up.

Program

W4DAE and W4CHI provided demonstrations and product reviews of chest harnesses they've used for holding HTs and related gear.  Chest harnesses hold your HT more securely than a belt clip and, with the help of a speaker-mic, keep both hands free for other tasks.

David reviewed a U.S.-made Conterra model he purchased for about $37.

Ron reviewed an X-Fire harness he picked up on Amazon for about $35.

Adjournment

There being no further business on the agreed agenda, the meeting was adjourned without objection at 09:18 am.

Respectfully submitted,
/s/ W8LWX-John
Secretary
