Tri-County Amateur Radio Club
Minutes of Meeting: 15 October 2022

A regular monthly meeting of the Tri-County Amateur Radio Club was held on Saturday, 15 October 2022 at 8:30 am EDT in Room 221 of the Finch Building at Davidson-Davie Community College, 297 DCC Road, Thomasville, with the president, W4DAE-David, being in the chair.  The meeting was called to order at 8:34 am.

At least five days prior to this meeting, a special notice was e-mailed to members via the Groups.io membership mailing list under section 4.4 of the Bylaws, stating that members would be able to participate remotely in this meeting via the Zoom videoconferencing service and by telephone. No one participated via either of these methods prior to adjournment of the meeting; but one member, K4DSX (Rod), participated via Zoom videoconference during K4KKT's post-meeting presentation.

Members Attending:  W4DAE, David; KR3HAB, Albert; K4KKT, Joe; W8LWX, John; KX4QP, Donald; KK4RR, Richard; N8UAX, Mark; NL7UP, MeLinda; KJ4UYR, Janice; and KO4WXR, Fred.

Guests:  none.

Adoption of Agenda

A draft agenda had been distributed by the president prior to commencement of the meeting, allowing members in attendance to propose changes or additions to it if desired. The president modified the draft by removing the erroneous listing of an open motion from the previous meeting.  As so modified, the draft agenda was adopted by unanimous consent.

Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting

By unanimous consent, reading of the minutes of the September 2022 meeting was waived and they were adopted.

Reports of Officers and Committees

Report of the Secretary. --  There have been no changes to the roster since the previous meeting.

Report of the Treasurer. --  The report for the month ending September 30, 2022, was unchanged from the report for the previous month.

Report of the President. --  Our DDCC meeting room is still reserved for November and December.  We are still looking for a suitable restaurant where we could hold our meetings.  We have heard that the Wallburg Diner has a separate meeting area but it might be too small.  We will be having a look at it soon to evaluate.

Report of KK4RR on Lexington Hamfest. --  The Lexington Hamfest was very actively attended by local hams.  There were about 30-40 tables and probably several hundred hams.  We had no license testing applicants, but the club took in $49 from sales of surplus gear offered at its table, staffed by KK4RR and NL7UP.

Open Motions from Previous Meeting

There were no open motions from the previous meeting.

New Business

Nominating Committee. -- W4DAE solicited volunteers to serve on the Nominating Committee, which must nominate one, and only one, member for each office (president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer) at the November meeting.  The Nominating Committee's task is only to ensure that no office lapses into vacancy for lack of a nominee.  Additional nominations are always welcome "from the floor" at the November meeting.  Members then elect the next set of officers at the December meeting by choosing from among those who have been nominated.  NL7UP volunteered to serve on the Nominating Committee and was so appointed by the president.

Disposition of Surplus Low-Value Gear. --  A table was laid out with certain low-value gear that the club offered to the public at large at the recent Lexington Hamfest but could not sell. On October 10, 2022, members were notified by the president through the Groups.io member mailing list that these items would be brought to the meeting; that we would discuss what to do with the items; and that there might be a motion to distribute the items to members having a use for such gear.

KK4RR moved that all such items be made available first to any members present who wished to have them and who might optionally make a cash donation to the club upon taking them; and that anything still remaining on the table thereafter would be sold for scrap by NL7UP, who would donate all proceeds from the scrap operation back to the club.  The motion was adopted unanimously.

Program and Announcements

KK4RR announced, as a reminder, that he (along with certain other local hams) conducts online Zoom-based instruction for people who wish to take the Technician class FCC exam or upgrade to a General class license.  The Tech and General classes are offered in alternating months, except that no classes are offered in December.  The next Tech class will be offered in January 2023.  Typically there have been 5 to 9 students per class, from all over the state and even from outside North Carolina.

Reminder: The club mailing list on Groups.io is available for each and every member to use whenever he or she wishes to send out a radio-related announcement or information to all other club members.  It's easy to do: just address the e-mail to members@nc4ar.groups.io and it will be automatically forwarded to all subscribed members.  Just make sure the communication relates to ham radio (i.e., no politics, chain letters, advertising, religious proselytizing, etc.).

Adjournment

There being no further business on the agreed agenda, the meeting was adjourned without objection at 9:03 am.

Following adjournment, K4KKT presented a demonstration of his MMDVM DMR hotspot, which allows his 2m/70cm HT to tie in to DMR networks via an Ethernet or WiFi internet link.

Respectfully submitted,
/s/ W8LWX-John
Secretary
