A regular monthly meeting of the Tri-County Amateur Radio Club was held on Saturday, 16 September 2023 at 11:30 am EDT at Tres Amigos restaurant, 108 Randolph Street, Thomasville, NC, with the vice president, W4DAE-David, being in the chair. The meeting was called to order at 11:30 am.
Members Attending: W4DAE, David; K4DSX, Rod; W8LWX, John; WB2RFK, Ken; KJ4UYR, Janice; and N2WOB, Susan.
Guests: KQ4KVC, Karl.
Adoption of Agenda
A draft agenda had been distributed prior to commencement of the meeting. Members were invited to propose changes or additions if desired. The draft agenda was then adopted by unanimous consent.
Approval of Minutes from Previous Meeting
Without objection, reading of the draft minutes of the August 2023 meeting was waived and they were adopted.
Reports of Officers and Committees
Report of the Secretary. -- There have been no changes to the roster since the previous meeting.
Report of the Treasurer. -- For the month ending 31 August 2023, we still had $560.33 left over from our initial operating budget of $850. We had a total of $1,485.61 in "cash on hand," which includes the balances of our checking, savings, and PayPal accounts, plus any currency, coins, and checks awaiting deposit. After setting aside the funds dedicated to the operating budget, this means that, as of the end of the month, we had a net total of $925.28 in uncommitted resources available for other uses. For the 2023 membership year, we have received $585.14 in dues, donations, and interest, and have spent $304.00, resulting in net income of $281.14 as of month's end.
Report of the Vice President. -- Two nights ago, we discovered that the club's 145.290 MHz repeater was down. Since the back-up repeater on 146.865 MHz was also unresponsive, the club's weekly Thursday night net could not be held. KF4QDS-John, has agreed to look into the problem.
Members are reminded that the club officers are always interested to hear of any leads on a potential new repeater site that would be likely to provide better service than the one we already have.
Open Motions from Previous Meeting
There were no open motions from the previous meeting.
New Business
The 2023 nominating committee was appointed, consisting of W4DAE (chair), K4DSX, and W8LWX. The nominating committee does not recommend or endorse any candidate for any office. Instead, the purpose of the committee is merely to ensure that there is at least one nominee for each office so that no office is left vacant.
At the November meeting, the nominating committee will nominate one, and only one, candidate for each office (president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer). Anyone else wishing to serve may be nominated from the floor at the November meeting and need not go through the nominating committee.
The current vice president will not serve again next year. Any member willing to serve in that role next year, or in any other, should let the nominating committee know of his or her interest.
Program and Announcements
There was no program.
K4DSX-Rod announced that last week was the NC "Parks on the Air" ("POTA") event. Most parks in NC were activated. Rod made about 600 contacts in 14 hours from the North Carolina Transportation Museum using his own call sign and suggested that, with proper planning and the consent of the club trustee, he and at least one other club member could participate in POTA under the NC4AR club call sign in the future. There was discussion of how this might be achieved in a manner satisfactory to the trustee.
W8LWX-John reported that September 19 of each year is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, during which participants say things like "Aaargh!" or "Shiver me timbers!" -- which, if we were so inclined, might serve as an excuse for a fun on-air club event next year. (It was too late to do it this year.) For example, we could set up a table in a public place and conduct an HF special event from a portable station, providing for a pirate-themed certificate of some kind. Members of the public passing by, who might otherwise regard ham radio as a stodgy hobby, might warm to the lighter side of it. There is a group that has conducted such an event in past years under the special event call sign K9P but they did not appear to be doing it in 2023.
